Dealing with Family Issues

The family unit is rife with difficult emotions and dynamics under the best of circumstances. Throw a health scare curveball into the mix and those dynamics become increasingly difficult to navigate. How to discuss important decisions with loved ones, whether or not they agree with your choices? Contrary to what we might hope for or expect, under stress, communication is only more difficult and consequential; old differences and gaps tend to widen, right when collaboration and consensus and peace are most craved.

Most people agree that with time and energy growing ever more precious, few goals are more important—or elusive—than family cohesion. And if cohesion or acceptance proves unrealistic, then expressing oneself clearly and effectively is itself therapeutic. Consider a group consultation with all members of your care crew, whether “family” by blood or by circumstance. This is a great way to get everyone on the same page.

You might need help pondering big topics like loss, or you might just need help getting a consensus on best ways to navigate the path ahead. Or you or a loved one might need to feel seen and heard and maybe even accepted. Whatever end is attainable, Mettle Health counselors are pros at helping you and your loved ones arrive at the highest potential with confidence and clarity.
