Post-intensive care syndrome

PSA! Did you know there’s a thing called Post Intensive Care Syndrome?

Post-intensive care syndrome, or PICS, is made up of health problems that remain after critical illness. These issues are present when a patient is in the ICU and may persist after the patient returns home. It can involve the patient's body, thoughts, feelings, or mind and may affect the family as well.

We think of the hospital as a place that can fix us and send us on our way in back-to-normal shape, but a lot of times that isn’t the case and it can make a person feel crazy for not feeling great. An ICU stay may have saved a persons life, but what happens after they go home?

We found out about PICS after reading the wonderful book, Every Deep Drawn Breath, by Wes Ely, MD (Link in bio!☝️) If you need proof that there is humanity left in the healthcare system, we encourage you to check it out.
