Integrating Mindfulness

Our podcast is hosted on Spotify and Anchor.

Mindfulness meditation is the foundation of concentration and settling practices. Through a combination of mindfulness and sensory awareness we can engage with the natural world in ways that help us physically, emotionally, spiritually, and ecologically. Mettle Health counselor Ladybird Morgan, RN, MSW and special co-host, Radhule Weininger, Ph.D. host an interactive discussion on using mindfulness to cope and reduce stress related to serious illness.

We discuss:

  • 0:00 Introductions

  • 4:07 Mindfulness and meditation practices: who are they for?

  • 5:00 Coming to mindfulness from different mindsets

  • 14:48 Experiencing freedom in your body - Mindfulness is not about escaping, it allows you to show up for a lot of difficulty

  • 16:22 Thinking about mindfulness as a way to inhabit your life, instead of escape it

  • 17:18 How to think about quieting our minds - noticing our thoughts and our feelings and noticing the stillness that is already there

  • 21:00 Spaciousness created through mindfulness at the end of life

  • 22:00 The world is also responding to YOU, not just you responding to the world

  • 22:58 There is a sense of open-heartedness when you are in a more spacious place: it’s easier to love, to forgive, to not be resentful

  • 26:30 We become more gentle with ourselves, becoming friends with ourselves - when we can be friends with ourselves, we can broaden that out to the pets, our neighbors, our friends, and our partners

  • 28:23 How to start a new meditation or mindfulness practice? Using it as a solo practice vs. a group or community practice

  • 36:35 Suffering can be related to being reactive - feeling the frustration, and then for a moment, make a choice to pause and feel your body and exhale to relax - we can always take 5 min for a short practice to check in with ourselves and feel what hurts us and feel compassion for ourselves

  • 40:15 {8 Min Mindfulness exercise with Radhule}

  • 48:38 There is a beauty to having a teacher or a guide in meditation and mindfulness

  • 49:47 Comparisons of meditation and mindfulness to a gym or exercise practice

  • 50:28 Think of mindfulness as a practice, and not something to master - if you can see it as a way of being friends with yourself, an extension of you being in the world, it shifts things out of the performance and quantifying

  • 51:30 The world can be a hard place, but if we’re working on our-self we’re creating a positive ripple that moves outwards - an equanimity ripple - there is a quality of the presence that we bring to our interactions
