World Alzheimer’s Day
Today is World Alzheimer’s Day and we hope this tiny shout out can express our support for the efforts of organizations who help families understand, and live with different types of dementia AND the people living with, and caring for, people with dementia.
Illnesses of any kind are hard on families and caregivers, but Alzheimer's takes everything from a body and tends to do so very slowly. The effects are not just physical, but psychological and emotional and spiritual and just about every way you can think of. Losing function is one thing, but losing yourself is something importantly different and watching someone you care about losing the things that defined their personalities and relationships is it’s own kind of heartbreak.
Every 65 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. At current rates, experts believe the number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s will quadruple to as many as 16 million by the year 2050. While there is no cure for this disease, we hope that understanding it more will help caregivers interact with their loved ones who are living with dementia and make the losses a little easier to bear.
One of our favorites talks on this topic is from Sallie Tisdale, RN for @endwellproject. Sallie offers a radically different perspective on dementia and offers a way for us to imagine the possibility of happiness for even the most complicated illnesses and deaths.
