Practical Emotional Existential

Practical: of or concerned with the actual doing or use of something rather than with theory and ideas.

Emotional: relating to a person's emotions.

Existential: relating to existence.

When it comes to illness, or disability, or nearing the end of a life, we believe there are many factors involved that need tending to. There’s the practical stuff: scheduling doctor appointments, cooking meals, making treatment decisions. There’s the emotional stuff: feeling scared or angry without a way to cope. And there’s the existential stuff: who are you in the world? How might you change or hold on to what’s important?

We think you can’t have one of these without the others, and trying to cordon them off from each-other is an exercise in futility. Practical bleeds into existential, which bleeds into emotional, and then circles back again. That’s why we aim to discuss and support you on all these aspects, no matter what you’re going through. We call it “praxistential" care, a word we totally made up, but that’s only because there isn’t anything out there to describe it.

Have you had a moment where you felt all three at once? It can be a liberating feeling, or a weighty one, we’d love to hear about either.
