Our healthcare system

OOOOOOO-EEEE THIS may be at the root of it all.

Our healthcare system is built around diseases: so a doctor may specialize in heart disease, or pancreatic cancer, or COPD, but that doesn’t mean they are specialists in the human being who is living with that illness. Two people may have the same exact same illness, but massively different experiences navigating that illness due to existing support in their life, financial considerations, what place they call home, what language they speak, who they are as a person, these aspects needs to be taken into consideration.

This a MASSIVE gap in our system that leads to so much unnecessary suffering. By focusing on the person living with the disease, we can help create a path forward that works for them and their caregivers, not just what the healthcare system dictates should be the next steps.

This is not to say it’s all one or the other. There needs to be an important shift that right-sizes the importance of the person living with the illness so that they are considered against what the healthcare system has to offer.
