Did you know…
…that after a certain period of time, Medicare no longer covers the cost of living in a skilled nursing facility?
It’s very true, and sadly tends to be more of a shock in the moment than an expected cost pivot. Many people think that because Medicare is a safety net for those after retirement, that it covers all costs related to care after that point, but it’s just not so.
Example of costs in original Medicare:
You pay this for each benefit period:
1. Days 1–20: $0 coinsurance per day
2. Days 21–100: Up to $194.50 coinsurance per day
3. Days 101 and beyond: All costs
We wish we had the answer on how people can expect to pay for these stays, but it’s different for everyone based on their finances. While this is a scary reality, we think knowing about it now will help you prepare for the future.
