Did you know…

…that Medicare only covers a short period of time in a SNF: skilled nursing facility? (And that’s only IF you need skilled nursing! Medicare doesn’t cover custodial care if it’s the only kind of care you need in a SNF. Custodial care is care that helps you with daily activities like getting in and out of bed, eating, bathing, dressing, and using the bathroom. I.E. NORMAL AGING)

Sadly, it’s true! Most of us -we’re speaking from our own brains- expect that Medicare, this thing that we’ve been paying into our whole working lives, will then cover all types of facility care when needed, but it’s just not the case. You have to have to a qualifying inpatient hospital stay, and even then, Medicare only pays all fees up to 20 days, at which point some part of the co-insurance will go back to you or your family.

So when you think about the care that you, or someone you’re caring for, may need, make sure you know what will be covered and what you’ll be expected to pay out of pocket. There are other programs, usually by state, that also cover facility stays, but that’s a whole other nightmare of paperwork for another post. The main point here is: do not expect Medicare to cover these costs.
